Meter Panel Materials, Explained
Why bakelite remains the standard for insulated meter panels, and when a custom-cut panel is the right call.
Bakelite endures for a reason
Rigid, non-conductive, dimensionally stable and rated under AS 1795 — bakelite has outlasted decades of alternatives because it drills cleanly, holds gear securely and doesn't creep or track.
When to cut custom
Older enclosures and custom boards rarely match modern stock panel sizes. A panel cut to the enclosure's exact aperture avoids site trimming, preserves edge clearances and keeps the installation looking factory-built.
