7 Signs a Switchboard Needs Upgrading
Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, flickering lights and warm panels — the warning signs that a switchboard is overdue for replacement.
The obvious red flags
Ceramic rewireable fuses, an asbestos-backed panel, no RCD protection, and a board too crowded to add a circuit are the classic four. Any one of them justifies replacement; most old boards have several.
The behavioural symptoms
Breakers that trip without obvious cause, lights that flicker when appliances start, warm spots on the panel and buzzing from the board all point to loose terminations, overloaded circuits or failing gear — all resolved properly by a new board, not by resetting and hoping.
Upgrade once, properly
A modern replacement board arrives pre-wired with main switch, RCBOs and metering provision, sized with spare ways for solar, EV charging and future circuits. Doing the meter box, panel and board in one visit costs far less than three separate jobs.
