5 Meter Box Installation Mistakes That Cause Defects

Height, sealing, panel clearances, cable dressing and box selection — the recurring meter box defects and how to avoid each one.

Wrong height, wrong spot

Meters must be readable and accessible — typical mounting centres the metering between roughly 900mm and 1800mm, clear of gates, gas equipment and hose taps per the service rules. Boxes buried behind bins or planting draw defects and estimated bills alike.

Sealing and clearance sins

Network sections must be sealable: missing sealing screws, drilled covers and panels crowded to the edge all fail. Keep the service fuse and neutral link accessible with working clearance, and leave the network's sealing provisions intact.

Dress cables, choose the right box

Undersized boxes force tight bends and crowded panels — the root of half these defects. Size the box to the metering layout with room to dress cables properly, and the installation passes on look alone.
