Solar Metering: What Changes at the Meter Box

Bidirectional metering, main switch requirements and panel space — what a solar installation needs at the metering position.

The meter swap

Solar exports require a bidirectional smart meter, installed by the retailer's metering provider after the network approves the connection. The installer's job is making sure the metering position is ready: compliant panel, room for the meter and correct labelling.

Main switch and isolation

A solar supply main switch at the switchboard, inverter isolation and the required signage are inspection staples. Boards with spare ways and clear labelling provision make the solar retrofit clean; crowded boards trigger upgrades first.

Check the box while you're there

A solar job is the natural moment to replace a tired meter box or asbestos-suspect panel. The trades are already on site, the supply is already isolated, and a 600x600 box with a fresh bakelite panel future-proofs the position.
