Choosing the Right Meter Box Size

How to pick between 300x300, 400x400, 500x500, 600x600 and 600x900 meter boxes for residential and commercial metering installations.

Match the box to the metering

The box size follows the metering layout, not the other way around. A single-phase single meter fits a 300x300; a standard residential service with main switch and service fuse usually calls for 600x600; multi-phase or multi-meter commercial installations step up to 600x900. Leave room for the panel, the service fuse enclosure and cable dressing — a cramped box costs more time than a bigger box costs money.

Think about what's coming

Solar, EV charging and granny flats all add metering and protection over a property's life. If there's any prospect of load growth, size up one increment now — retrofitting a larger box later means network coordination and wall repairs that dwarf the original saving.

Depth and mounting matter too

Standard 255mm-deep boxes suit surface mounting; flush installations use a 100mm panel-and-surround format instead. On poles, pair the box with a U-hook bracket and backing plate so the enclosure sits rigid and rattle-free.
