What Size Meter Box Do I Need?

A quick sizing guide mapping common meter box sizes to residential and commercial metering layouts.

Size follows the metering

Meter box size is quoted as width x height in millimetres and is driven by the metering layout — the number of meters, the phase configuration and the service protection. Work out what has to fit inside, then choose the box with room to dress cables.

Common sizes and what they hold

Use this as a starting point and confirm against the metering layout.

Size (mm)Typical use
300 x 300Single meter or sub-meter
400 x 400Compact single-phase
500 x 500Residential upgrade
600 x 600Full single-phase service
600 x 900Three-phase or multi-meter

When in doubt, size up

A cramped box costs more in labour and rework than a larger box costs to buy, and it leaves no room for the solar, EV and load growth most properties see. If there is any prospect of growth, size up one increment. EVO supplies the full range to the trade — request a quote with your metering details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size meter box does a standard house need?

A full single-phase residential service with a main switch and service fuse usually needs a 600x600 box. Smaller boxes suit single meters, and three-phase or multi-meter jobs step up to 600x900.

Should I buy a bigger box than I need right now?

If there is any prospect of adding solar, EV charging or a secondary dwelling, yes. Sizing up one increment now is far cheaper than retrofitting a larger box later, which involves network coordination and wall repairs.
