Private Power Pole Installation: What to Order
A checklist of the pole, hardware and consumables a compliant private power pole installation needs — from cap to concrete.
Start with pole material and length
Galvanised steel in 6.5m or 7.2m covers most jobs; timber suits like-for-like replacements and composite suits difficult access or corrosive sites. Length is driven by required POA height and embedment depth — roughly 10% of pole length plus 600mm in the ground is the traditional rule, always subject to network requirements.
The hardware checklist
A complete order: pole (with cap and nut-and-bolt hook if steel), strain clamp for the ABC service cable, service connectors for the actives and neutral, and a U-hook bracket with backing plate if the meter box mounts on the pole. Screw-in J hooks are for timber poles only.
Setting the pole
20kg pre-blended builders concrete sets the pole — typically six to ten bags depending on hole size. Brace the pole plumb, pour and rod the mix in lifts, and let it cure before stringing the service.
