Switchboard Compliance: AS/NZS 61439 Basics

What the AS/NZS 61439 series means for main switchboards, and what to check before a board goes to site.

What 61439 covers

AS/NZS 61439 replaced the old 3439 series as the standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. It sets design verification, temperature-rise, short-circuit and clearance requirements for the assembly as built — not just its components.

Verification responsibilities

The assembly manufacturer verifies the design; the installer verifies the installation. Buying from a fabricator who builds to 61439-aligned construction, with rated busbar arrangements and documented layouts, keeps the compliance chain intact when the certifier asks.

Practical checks before dispatch

Confirm the fault rating suits the supply, segregation matches the tenancy and metering layout, labels match the schedule, and sealing provisions are in place for the network sections. These are the items inspectors defect most often.
