How fast salt works
Within a kilometre of breaking surf, a standard coated enclosure can show rust bloom at fasteners and hinges inside two years. Once the coating is breached at an edge or drill point, corrosion runs under the finish and the door stops sealing.
Specify for the zone
316 stainless enclosures, stainless hinges and latches on coated boxes, sacrificial-washer fasteners and marine-grade powder systems all extend service life. The right specification depends on distance from surf and exposure to onshore wind.
Small habits, long life
Rinse-downs at service visits, touch-up paint on any site-drilled penetration and a smear of lanolin on hinges cost minutes and add years. Note them on the handover and the enclosure outlasts the meter inside it.
