Flush vs Surface Mounted Meter Boxes

Recessed panel-and-surround or surface-mounted box? How wall construction and streetscape decide the metering format.

Surface: the default

A surface-mounted box suits any wall, installs fast and gives full 255mm depth for gear and cable dressing. On brick veneer, cladding and poles it's the practical default — and replacement is straightforward decades later.

Flush: built into the wall

Flush metering recesses a panel and surround into cavity brick or a framed wall, sitting nearly flat to the finished surface. It's the tidier streetscape option for front facades — but the opening must be formed during construction, not afterwards.

Decide before the bricks

The flush decision belongs at frame stage. Order the surround early, build the opening to its dimensions and the metering position finishes factory-neat. Retrofitting flush metering into a finished wall rarely justifies the cost.
