Granny Flat Metering: Getting Dual Occupancy Right

Separate metering for secondary dwellings — the metering layout, box sizing and board configuration dual-occupancy sites need.

One service, two meters

Most granny flats share the main dwelling's service with separate metering per occupancy. That means a metering position with room for two meters, two service fuses and a neutral link arrangement that keeps the installations distinct.

Size the enclosure for two

A 600x900 meter box is the practical minimum for dual metering with service protection and cable dressing space. Squeezing two meters into a single-meter box is the most common defect on dual-occupancy jobs.

Pre-built dual-occupancy boards

Boards can be pre-configured for exactly this arrangement — three phase metering for the main dwelling, single phase for the secondary, each with its own protection. Ordering the configuration up front beats improvising it on site.
